Fitness facilities on a US Navy destroyer carrying 300 crew members?
What kind of fitness facilities (gyms, etc.) are there on a US Navy destroyer carrying 300 crew members? Are they separate facilities for officers and enlisted personnel or are all these facilities for everyone? I heard that junior officers are extremely busy when the ship is underway, but do most of them have time or make it a practice to exercise every day? Just curious.

depends on the ship’s crew and what they choose to do with their slush fund.. the White Hats typiucally buy some equipment.
there will usually be a basketball hoop on the Hangar deck as well.
where it goes will depend on where there is an empty corner.
Treadmills and elipticals tend to be in Passageways tucked under stuff. free weights will be stashed in an unused storeroom or something along with maybe a bench.
the equipment is open to all although if something is located in Officer Country it will only be used by them( Es are not permitted down there unless on business) .
every day will not be an option for excercise, but you can make time throughout the week if you have good time management skills. Mrsjvb
On an ARLEIGH BURKE-class Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG), there are usually facilities for a little bit of cardio and a weight room, but they aren’t in the same spot. The cardio room is almost always in the towards the bow, or forward part of the ship, in a place called Forward Pallet Staging Area. It’s pretty much directly underneath the 5″ gun on the foc’sle. Normally, you can find three treadmills, and a couple of elliptical machines up there, with a couple of stationary bikes tucked away in various nooks and crannies of the ship.
Somewhere aft (it’s been on different places in the two DDGs I’ve served aboard) is the weight room.
No, not separate facilities for Os and Es-DDGs are too small for such extravagances. As for junior officers making time to work out-it’s just that, making time, normally by sacrificing sleep. I ran on a treadmill for 30 minutes or so every third day instead of going to dinner. Also of concern is sea state-if the sea is too rough, you probably don’t want to try and run, since the cardio room is in one of the rockier location of the ship. Armed with Inkstick
