i found that local YMCA's are usualy a much better bargain money wise and also give you access to a pool, hot tub, sauna, ice rinks etc depending on what they have available. Usualy buying monthly passes or yearly passes can save you immense amounts of money. I personaly save 4 months free a year on a yearly pass as i go 5 times a week.

Just find one that is clean, has good equipment and has good customer service. also remember that you get a much more relaxed atmosphere there as it is family oriented compared to hardcore gyms with scary looking people ;) herodavidxx

We have a family membership, and I think the cost is very decent. I use the weights, my wife goes there to use the walking track, and our kids like the pool. It cost $50 a month for the family membership. It's a good deal for a family of 5. billyboy64

I agree that in comparison to other gyms, the YMCA is higher. But, I've found that unlike other gyms they have more programs for families. i.e. kids basketball, flag football, swimming programs, summer camps. They also are more community oriented in the respect that if you want to use their facilities for some type of gathering, they'll usually let you. Most other gyms are just that...gyms. If you have a family, you can really get your moneys worth, if you are just looking to workout, it might be better to join another gym. In all honesty, it boils down to personal preference. santojams

Tell me about it! I was atonished at how much my local YMCA was charging for gym membership. And, the building was old, and machines were old. I found a brand new gym that charged just as much as the Y was charging. I could see joining the Y gym if you got access to added benefits other than the gym membership ... rslily2003

YMCA is not high cost fitness. In comparison, it is VERY low cost, although the quality is rather low compared to most. Trust me, I sell memberships at a gym and most of my members would love to pay what the YMCA charges. Is it worth it?? Think about extending your life with healthy happy years... if that isn't worth a few bucks than what is? slgriswold
